Polymer Clay Canes

August 13, 2008

Sculpting with clay used to be a common creative art work given to kids to enhance their creativity. Today, creating such imaginative things has become much easier and more striking by using the polymer clay canes.

The polymer clay is a sculptable matter based on the polymer named polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The only difference being, that it does not contain any kind of clay minerals and is called “clay” as its texture and the properties are similar to the mineral clays. Polymer clay canes are logs of polymer clay created by layering varyingly colored and differently shaped clay patterns together to form a desired pattern or a picture. The length can be reduced which results into a smaller cane and thus smaller pictures. Based on the requirements the canes can be created or pressed to form different shapes like rectangle, triangles or any irregular shapes. After the creation of the design, the clay work should be baked at 275° temperature for 20-25 min to get the proper adhesion and the glassy looks. The polymer clays have certain interesting properties that help create more artistic things. The polymer clay can be colored using additional media like paint, ink, colored pencils, chalk, glitter, embossing powder and also metallic or mica containing powder thus enhancing the created sculpture.

The polymer clay cane is thus a very simple and creative material that can be used to bring out ones inner creative skills.
