Polymer Clay Sculpture

Polymer clay is used in sculpture because it is possible to give it various designs and shapes. It is basically composed of PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

It is called clay because it has properties similar to clay, making it suitable for carving out sculptures.

It is a plastic and to give it the properties of being capable of being molded and sculpted, additives called plasticizers are added to give it the desired durability, ease of sculpting and flexibility. These are chemicals, usually esters which get embedded in the plastic and make it softer. It becomes easier to work on, but it loses some of its strength and hardness in the bargain. The process has to be carried out carefully or the final product may give off a foul odour.

Sculptures of polymer clay can be tiny sculptures made to keep on table tops or adorn drawing rooms or larger creations made in ‘Bas Relief’ for decorating large halls. Clay clothing can also be made for sculptures. The sculptures are either hand painted or the material of the desired color is first produced and then sculpted to the required shape.

Polymer clay sculptures can be purchased either from art shops or Gallery Shows/exhibitions.
